Biscuits!
You'll wonder why you haven't been making them from scratch this whole time! :)
This Basic Recipe will definitely change your mind on buying those store bought biscuits, Tasty and easy to make, freezable, and much cheaper to make, or you could
Buying them in a can and with all those chemicals we all love so much!
I love making home made old fashion biscuits, nothing fancy about it, just quick and simple. From start to finish it should only take about 15-20 minutes at the most. You should also have all the ingredients around, that's why this recipe is so great, if your in a bind and need some biscuits these are the ones for you! :)
Lets start by first pre-heating the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, or 230 degrees Celcius. Then we are going to start with two cups of flour. You can sift the flour if you want to, I didn't and I usually don't, but again you can do it if you want to.
Next we will be adding 1 tablespoon of baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. You can actually cut the baking powder down to 2 teaspoons if you'd like, I use 1 tablespoon because it makes the biscuits super fluffy. You will also need to mix in 1 teaspoon of salt (I use kosher salt but that's because I really like it, any salt will be fine) You can also cut the salt in half if you like down to 1/2 teaspoon.
Here you have a couple of options on what you want to use, I used margarine, mostly because I don't like using my stick butter for these sorts of things I usually use it when making pie crusts or puff pastries, You can also use shortening if you have it (like Crisco) I generally don't use that with biscuits either mostly because I like the butter flavor in the biscuits and I feel like shortening doesn't really add any flavor. Any of those will work, we will need to cut in 1/2 cup of Margarine, butter or shortening to the flour.
Mix until coarse crumbs are made, at this point you will want to start slowly adding in about 3/4 cup of milk, adding it in at about 1/4 of a cup at a time. Sometimes you won't need all 3/4 of a cup. Mix about 1/4 of a cup at a time, mixing just enough milk into it to make a slightly, and I mean slightly, like barely sticky dough. Then lightly flour your working surface and hands and turn the dough out on to it and knead it just until everything is well combined.
Roll it out until it's about 1/4" thick, and then with a biscuit cutter or something similar, like here I used a small glass that we had because I couldn't find the little tin can that I usually use for such, you can really use anything that is the size that you'd like your biscuits to be. This is another reason why I like this recipe so much, winging it is totally possible.
We're going to roll and cut until we are all done with the dough, the last little bit of dough most likely won't need to be cut, you can just form it into a biscuit by rolling it into a ball and pressing it out with your fingers or pressing down on it with the bottom of a small cup.
Once you've made all the biscuits place them evenly spaced on a cookie sheet, you should have about 15 made if you made your biscuits similar in size to mine, here in the picture. We are going to bake these in the oven for about 10 minutes. Or until its a golden brown color.
You have now made super easy super simple in a pinch biscuits! Why buy them? when you can make them with literally 6 ingredients compared to the crazy amount of chemicals and unknown ingredients you would find in those canned store bought biscuits. If you are looking to make these in advance, they are freezable, you would treat them how you would sugar cookies. Roll them into a tubular/cylindrical shape, wrap in plastic wrap, put that In a freezer zip-lock and freeze for up to 6 months. When you need to use them you can cut them like you would sugar cookies and throw them on a cookie sheet and bake them for about 20 minutes (from frozen) If you let them thaw out a little bit roll them out and cut them with a biscuit cutter, either way you can make your biscuits in advance and have them whenever you need them.
Well I hope I helped you with making your own biscuits, If you have any changes you'd like to share or anything you'd do differently, or if you just loved this recipe please leave a comment below!
As always thanks for stopping by! Until next time! May your food adventures be GREAT!
